Abroad, comfortable and stylish mixers with one lever instead of two valves appeared quite a long time ago - the first patent for such a device was issued in 1954. The author of the development was Delta Faucet.

The main element of the invented mixer was a ball valve consisting of the following three components:

• metal ball with three convergent holes in one cavity;
• a saddle made of rubber gaskets;
• the rod by which the position of the ball can be changed.

The principle of operation of the ball valve is extremely simple: hot and cold water fill the ball through the inlet holes, then they are mixed in its internal cavity - the mixing chamber - and through the third hole enter the outlet channel of the mixer in the form of a flow with a comfortable temperature for the user.

The saddle was designed in such a way that the entrance holes of the ball during its rotation (for this it was necessary to move the rod in different directions) could partially or completely overlap.

At the same time, the volumes of incoming hot and cold water could be changed independently of each other.

Thus, when the rod was shifted up and down, the pressure varied, and the water temperature to the right and to the left. Compared to a conventional two-valve mixer, the new device had two important advantages:

• adjustment of the head and water temperature could be done with one hand (and with one motion);
• the temperature of the water was enough to adjust only once, and not with every use of the mixer.

Somewhat later, the German company Hansgrohe proposed a different design of the single-lever mixer, the main working element of which was a disk-shaped cartridge consisting of two ceramic plates. Like the ball valve, it had three holes, and all of them were located below. Mixing of hot and cold water occurs at the top of the cartridge.

Single lever mixer system

Moving the lever, the user more or less combines the holes with the mixing chamber, thereby changing the volume of the incoming liquid. For smooth movement of the cartridge, silicone grease is used.

First, cartridge mixers were produced only in the classical version - with a lever in the form of a plate directed to the side.

Later the assortment was supplemented with mixers with a vertical lever resembling a computer joystick. They are called - joystick.

Due to the lack of sticking to the side of the lever plate joystick mixers are more compact. This allows you to realize spectacular design ideas, for example, to hide the mixer in the cabinet above the sink.

Ceramics very well tolerate friction and is not susceptible to corrosion, this is the main advantage of cartridge mixers. But they are very sensitive to the solid impurities contained in the water. The distance between the ceramic plates is extremely small and amounts to several tenths of a millimeter. Under such conditions, even the smallest grain of sand can cause a cleavage, which will then start to flow through the water.

The design and operation principle of a sanitary cartridge

Ball mixers for sand and rust are not afraid, but they are more difficult to make and require regular (approximately every two years) replacement of rubber seals.

Cheap cartridge mixers from little-known manufacturers should be bought with caution, as they can present an unpleasant surprise to the user. Because of poor design and the use of low-quality materials, such instruments often have a small temperature adjustment angle. This means that with their help it can be difficult to set a comfortable water temperature within 35 - 41 degrees.

Symptoms and causes of breakage

Any of the following phenomena indicates that the cartridge of the single-lever mixer is time to change:

1. Even with a strong pressure on the lever, the water can not be completely blocked.
2. In order to move the lever from side to side, you have to make considerable efforts.
3. The mixer began to leak.
4. The device reacts to the lever position inadequately: instead of hot water  cold or vice versa.

Replacing the cartridge

Getting Started

Do not rush to buy a new cartridge, we advise you to first extract the old one and then go to the store, taking it with you.

These elements are manufactured in a very diverse design and may differ in design, hole diameters and the size of the retainers in the lower part. Therefore, an inexperienced user who does not have a sample on his hands, can easily mistake and purchase the wrong model.

Act in the following sequence:

1. Close the flow to the hot and cold water mixer.
2. Try not to damage the cover, use a knife or a thin screwdriver to pry a decorative plug, and then remove it. Usually it can easily be recognized by a label with a red and blue color, denoting, respectively, hot and cold water. It happens that because of the scale, the plug can not be removed. In this case, it must be treated with a means to remove lime scale and after a short exposure again try to open the mixer. Similarly, you should do it every time the salt deposits interfere with the next operation.
3. By removing the cap, you will see a screw that fixes the lever of the mixer. It must be unscrewed using, depending on the profile of the head, a screwdriver or a hexagonal wrench of the appropriate size.
4. Now the lever can be removed.
5. Under the lever, a protective ring will be found. It is twisted easily enough and without the use of any tools.
6. The last step: unscrew the clamping nut, for which purpose it is necessary to use the adjustable wrench or the usual spanner of the correct size. The released cartridge can be removed.

Now you can go to the plumbing shop. On the newly purchased cartridge, you will see two protrusions that should coincide with the mounting holes inside the mixer. If you purchased an "incorrect" model or try to install an element with the wrong side, the protrusions and holes will not coincide.

Visual instructions for replacing a sanitary cartridge

After installing a new cartridge, all operations must be performed in the reverse order. Only first do not forget to clean the disassembled mixer and all its parts from lime and dirt, if necessary.

Common causes of breakdowns

• the water continues to flow with a trickle even when the valve is closed.

The failure of the mechanism can also be indicated by the reverse situation, when at a static position of the lever the water flows spontaneously change temperature.

The sequence of disassembly of the device

5. With a wrench or pliers with a narrow working part, unscrew the presser brass nut that holds the ceramic cartridge.
6. Remove the defective cartridge by pulling it slightly toward you, or gently rocking from side to side.

If the nail holding the ceramic cartridge "mesh" with the device, treat it with a WD-40 liquid. Having moistened the rusty nut with a "Vedeshka", in a few minutes you can unscrew it and remove it from the nest without much difficulty.

Thinness of cartridge installation

The extracted cartridge is carefully inspected for cracks and other faults. If they are found, they go to the store, not forgetting to take with them the failed element.

Having bought a new cartridge instead of the extracted defective part, proceed with its installation. Before installing a new unit, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the seat from the accumulated rust and dirt in previously prepared cuts of fabric. If this step is neglected, the accumulations accumulated on the bottom will not allow the new device to be sealed.

When mounting the cartridge on the seat, it is important to ensure that the projections of the device and the recesses in the mixer housing are completely matched. If this condition is not observed, there is a high probability that the equipment will leak when the mixer is turned on.

The fact that the protrusions of the cartridge are in the grooves of the body of the mixer will be indicated by a characteristic click, if there is not one, then it is necessary to apply a little more effort

After the faulty element has been replaced with a new one, the structure is assembled in the reverse order.

1. First, they are baited, and then tighten the fixing nut with pliers.
2. Mount the original protective cover.
3. Install the handle and screw it.
4. Tighten the locking screw.
5. Place the decorative plug in its original place.

After the completion of the assembly, it remains only to verify the efficiency of the mixer. For this, it is necessary to renew the water supply and turn on the mixer, gradually withdrawing the handle and observing whether there is a leak. If it is found, you will have to re-cover the water and fix all the shortcomings.

There are situations when the replacement of the "core" does not give the desired result. The crane continues to dig. In this case, the cause may be hidden in the gasket. Its main purpose is to seal the joint between the mechanism and the bottom of the mixer.

Since the gasket is very thin, even an insignificant corrosion on the housing will not allow it to fit as close as possible to the surface

The only way out of this situation is to disassemble the device and replace the gasket.

How to replace the ball mechanism

Most steps to change the ball cartridge in the mixer are similar to those described in the repair of disk devices.

The main stages of the replacement of the spherical mechanism:

1. On the crane lever, remove, using a screwdriver, a decorative plastic overlay.
2. The locking screw located under the cover, depending on the configuration of the head, is unscrewed with a hexagon or a Phillips screwdriver.
3. Remove the mixer lever.
4. The underlay, located under the lever, fixed on the crane body by means of threaded connection, unscrew the adjustable wrench.
5. With the help of pliers having a narrow working part, a ball valve is removed from the stem.
6. Inspect the rubber saddle of the cartridge and, in case of defects, replace it with a new one.
7. Remove the ball and inspect for surface defects. There should not be any rushes. Cavities in the ball are cleaned with rags from accumulated debris.
8. Replace the rubber gaskets and assemble the structure in the reverse order.

In the future, in order to protect the plumbing equipment from premature failure, it is necessary to install coarse filters at the input of cold and hot water.

With the job of replacing the cartridge in the mixer, you can cope even without having special knowledge and skills. First of all, the supply of hot and cold water must be cut off. 5. After the decorative cap is unscrewed, access to the nut holding the cartridge opens. It is unscrewed with the same key and the cartridge is removed.
6. Before installing a new device, you must clean the seat for it. During many years of operation, dirt accumulates in the mixer, which will prevent the cartridge from being sealed. The solid particles of ceramics, which were formed as a result of the destruction of ceramic discs, can also interfere with this.
7. When installing a new device, make sure that the protrusions on it coincide with the holes in the seat of the structure.
8. After that, the nut is twisted, a decorative cap, joystick and cap is installed.

This completes the repair of the mixer cartridge. Now follows check for leaks  and working capacity. To do this, the water supply opens. If the replacement of the cartridge in the mixer has been performed correctly, the device will work without any problems. All repair work should be done carefully, so as not to damage the decorative coating.

Buying the device, you should remember that there is nothing eternal and sooner or later the mixer can break, and you need to replace its individual parts.
