Blacksmithing technology allows you to create a huge list of items. Both tools and household items. But there is another direction - when entire works of art are created. At the same time, various patterns, decorations and even flowers are made from metal.

A forged rose will be an excellent gift or a good training for your skills. How to make it, what techniques and methods exist - more on this later in our material.

If you look for information on making a rose flower from metal using the blacksmith method, you can find many different techniques and techniques. The simplest of them are practically metalwork works with a minimum of forging. But there are also methods when a rose is made from one solid piece, using only forging technologies.

So, in what ways is a forged rose created?

Assembly from individual parts

To make a flower in this way, you will need a minimum of metal working skills. Blanks needed: rod 5-6 mm and sheet steel 1-1.5 mm.

The sheets are cut into blanks in the form of four interconnected petals. You will need 3 of them to get a completely voluminous flower.

Also, a cross in the form of pointed four petals is cut out from this sheet.

The next step is to take a rod, the end of which is heated and riveted. Then they move on to assembly.

Four-lobe blanks are placed on the end of the rod and welded on the outside.

Each of the elements is heated and twisted, gradually forming a flower.

After securing the first petal, all the rest are threaded with a rod from the other end.

When all the petals are installed, put on a cross, and the flower itself is heated and given the desired shape with pliers.

When the final finishing of the metal rose is completed, the flower must be burned and cleaned of traces of slag and burning. Additionally, you can work the stem with thorns and make leaves. The product should look like in the photo

But this method is more technically metalworking and welding than the Kuznetsk method. After all, blacksmithing techniques are practically not used. However, the method is original and easy to implement. Especially for those who do not have the appropriate equipment. How to make a rose using forged metal?

Forging

Forging a rose using this method uses all the skills of blacksmithing and the appropriate tools.

In essence, the basic technology is similar to that described in the previous section with the addition of basic Kuznetsk operations.

You will need rolled stock in the form of a 6 mm rod and 2-2.5 mm sheet steel for blanks for the petals of the future flower.

The rod is heated at one end and the edge is thickened. This can be done by holding it in a vice and using blows from the end to form a thickening.

To conveniently secure the petals around the thickening circle of the rod, you can make a groove with a chisel on the heated metal.

Blanks in the form of petals and crosses are cut from sheet steel in the same way as in the above method.

Each of the petals is pre-forged and thinned at the edges, dispersing the metal. At the same time, you can still create the veins inherent in a natural rose.

Before assembly, you can make thorns on the stem. To do this, you need to make thickenings on the rod using the planting technique, which are then, after securing the stem in a vice, formed into spikes.

Start assembling the flower from the prepared elements.

Each of the four-lobed parts is placed on a rod and welded. In this case, each element must be scrolled, making the desired shape. Also, after assembly, using pliers, give the product the desired volume and contours.

If you wish, you can also attach foliage to the stem. Each leaf is produced using the blacksmith method from a 2 mm steel sheet. A cutting is pulled from it, which is used to attach the element to the stem.

At the end of the work, the flower is cleaned of slag and soot.

You can also do a type of finishing such as bluing. To do this, you will need to apply a thin layer of unrefined oil to the product and heat it in the oven until the applied ingredient is covered with a varnish crust.

As a result of such blacksmithing “floriculture” the following result should be obtained:

Forged from a single piece of metal

This is the most blacksmith's way to make a forged rose with your own hands. To do this, you need a rolled blank: a circle with a diameter smaller than the planned parameters of the flower.

The blank is heated and stretched to a smaller diameter, thus making a stem. However, a part of the edge is left untouched; the future rose bud will form from it.

The workpiece is clamped in a vice and notches are made on the cylinder using undercuts.

After which, petal parts are again prepared from sheet steel, as in the previous two technologies, which are placed on the stem from the cut end. The formation of a bud is done using the same techniques; the element is secured, heated and rolled, obtaining a closed bud.

When all three or four metal parts are installed on the stem, their petals are opened with pliers, giving the desired shape to the forged rose.

Necessary materials for making a craft such as a metal rose with your own hands (dimensions are given for a specific master class):

  • a metal rod with a diameter of approximately 8-12 mm (the stem of our rose is made from it);
  • sheet metal, it is better to take half a centimeter thick (automobile metal is also suitable, for example, from the hood);
  • unused motor oil, about 400 grams.

DIY metal rose: drawings of petals

Cut out at least four squares measuring 10x10 cm from a metal sheet; to give the rose splendor, prepare more squares.

Draw rose petals on the squares, and on one of them draw a figure similar to a compass rose. This square will serve as a blank for the sepals of our rose. To make the product look more natural, do not try to achieve perfect symmetry.

Using a grinder or a grinder, cut out the petals of our rose, but do not cut all the way, i.e. not to the very center, as in the photo.

Now we need to flatten the ends of the rose petals, sepals and stem leaves. For this we need an anvil and a hammer. Using light blows of a hammer, flatten the ends of the workpieces. After that, using the back of the hammer, apply the texture of the leaves. It is enough to do this on one side.

If you need to make a metal rod shorter, use a grinder. Typically the stem length is between 40 and 50 centimeters. But you can do more or less if you wish.

Option 1 - working with a drill

Drill a hole clearly in the center with a drill. Its size should be equal to the diameter of the metal rod that serves as the stem. Remember that the rod must fit tightly into the drilled hole. This will make it easier to weld. If the diameter of the selected stem does not match the size of the hole (it turned out to be a little smaller), then simply drill a few more holes nearby so that they connect into one, which will be the desired diameter.

Option 2 - working with a welding machine

Bringing the electrode to the middle of the petal, light an arc. Press an electrode about three millimeters thick into the metal, piercing it right through. The current value should be set to 100 A. The hole will burn easily, so be careful not to make it larger than the diameter of the rose's stem.

In order to weld correctly and not lose the strength of our structure, it is better to make the holes not perfectly round, since at least 50% contact is required. To control the process, apply the stem to the hole from time to time.

DIY metal rose: scheme for giving the petals shape

Step back a couple of centimeters from one end of the rod (the stem of the rose) and place the petal blank on it. Each new layer must be positioned so that they form a cross shape. Attach each ball one by one by welding. It is better to melt the stem more than the petals, since their metal burns out very quickly. Bend the bottom petals down.

Now you can start working on giving the petals a shape:

  • turn on the gas heater and use it to heat the even petals;
  • using pliers or round nose pliers, bend the two central petals inward;
  • bend the remaining ones around the first two;
  • When all the petals are connected, bend the edges of each slightly.

Leaves for rose

The rose will not be complete if you do not attach leaves to it.

Operating procedure:

  1. Draw a leaf layout on a sheet of metal.
  2. Cut out the leaves using a grinder.
  3. Make small notches along the contour of each leaf.
  4. Give them a natural, slightly wavy shape.
  5. Weld the finished leaves to the stem.

The metal rose is ready. Now it can be decorated with thorns, which are also cut in the shape of triangles from a sheet of metal and welded to the stem.

Anti-corrosion treatment

To prevent the metal craft from deteriorating over time, it must be treated with an anti-corrosion substance. This can be varnish, spraying, paint.

Another option is motor oil. Before applying it, the rose must be heated. All parts of the craft should be treated with oil, after which the flower is again exposed to fire to remove excess.

Remember that it is better to perform all work either outdoors or in a specially equipped room that is well ventilated. And most importantly, do not forget about safety precautions when working with metal.

So, we will need metal mugs - you can use roofing iron or simple tin cans. We cut out circles with different diameters, approximately from 150 to 130 mm - the difference is 5 mm each, i.e. 150-145-140-135-130... You will need 5 of them - this is a blank for the flower itself.

Then cut out two strips approximately 2.5 cm wide. One should be 110 mm long, and the other 125 mm - this is for the inner leaves of the flower.

Then we need a star - fashionably four-pointed. We cut it out from a circle with a diameter of 110 mm - this will be the lower part of the flower.

On a separate sheet of metal we draw and then cut out the leaves themselves - 1 single and one triple is enough... I think this is better... then we cut notches along the edges of the leaves - a real appearance of a real leaf appears... and you can knock out the veins in the middle of the leaf with a simple screwdriver .

Then we bend the stem of the sheet inward - with pliers... and we get a finished sheet... Here - we need another piece of wire - maybe 6 in diameter - I make these... and a piece of copper tube can be used to cut an internal thread on one side under the M6 ​​screw - this is to screw the entire assembled rose... bud... and on the other side we simply solder it into the wire.

And so we cut out four-leaf flowers from metal circles and press each leaf as shown in the photo with pliers... squeeze it into a vase and turn away the edges a little - also with pliers... then when everything is ready, insert all the baskets one into the other and edit the folds of the leaves by eye ... then we drill a hole in the middle for a screw and twist it to the prepared tube - we solder the tube to the wire and screw the leaves with a metal strip prepared earlier ... - the edges can be soldered ... that's all ...

From these tin roses you can make anything that comes to mind - a hanger, a lamp, used to decorate a gate, etc.

List of parts and their quantity

To make a rose we will need the following parts:

  • The first outer leaf has 5 petals.
  • The second leaf is slightly smaller in diameter - 4 petals.
  • The third leaf of the same diameter has 4 petals;
  • The fourth leaf is slightly smaller in diameter - 3 petals.
  • Fifth leaf (propeller of slightly smaller diameter) - 4 narrow petals.
  • Five leaf star.

For the stem:

  • Branches 2-4 pieces.
  • Leaves 2-4 per branch.

Petal drawings

Four or more squares (depending on the volume of the rose) measuring 10 by 10 centimeters are cut out of sheet metal. Rose petals are drawn on them with a marker. A figure similar to a compass rose is drawn on one of the squares. This square will be the template for the sepals of the future flower. To achieve greater realism, you do not need to maintain perfect symmetry.

Use a grinder or a grinder to cut out the rose petals, but do not cut them all the way. After this, the blanks of petals, leaves and sepals are flattened along the edges. This can be done with a hammer on an anvil. With short blows of the tool, the tips of the workpieces are flattened, and then the texture of the leaves is applied to the metal surface with the pointed side of the hammer. It can be done on one or both sides.

If you need to shorten a metal rod, use a grinder. On average, the stem length is 40-50 cm, but this is a matter of taste. Then holes should be made in the petal blanks. They are performed in one of two ways: welding or drilling.

  1. Welding. The electrode is brought to the center of the petal and the arc is ignited. Its thickness should be approximately three millimeters, pressing into the metal plate, it is pierced through. The set current value is 100 A. The hole is burned quite simply, so you should be especially careful that its diameter is not wider than the size of the stem. In order for the welding to be correct and the strength of the structure not to be affected, it is good if the holes are not perfectly even, since 50% contact is sufficient. To control the process, it is recommended to try the stem to the hole as often as possible.
  2. Drilling. The hole is drilled strictly in the center. Its size should ideally match the thickness of the metal rod, which is the stem. The rod should fit tightly into the through hole, this will make the further welding process easier. If it turns out to be a little smaller, then drill more holes next to the hole and connect them together, checking the required diameter.

Cutting flowers and petals

After the petals have been given a characteristic structure, the outline is once again outlined with a marker, and the details begin to be cut out. There is no need to try to exactly fall into the line; at further stages of processing, the curvature of the petals will only make them more realistic. Experience has proven that it is easiest to first cut a circle along the contour, and then cut through the petals from the outside to the center. After this, the workpiece is turned over and the remaining sides are cut. Initially it will not be very convenient, since there is no pattern on the reverse side, but in the end everything will work out. Making a rose out of metal with your own hands according to the instructions proposed in our article is not difficult. But remember, the flower will look natural if you do not make all the details symmetrical.

Once the petals are cut out, you can move on to the leaves for the stem. They are drawn by hand, since symmetry is not needed here, and then cut out with metal scissors. Don’t worry that the metal may bend during the cutting process; later everything will straighten out and look as it should.

Assembling the rose, giving shape

A few centimeters are removed from the end of the stem and clamped with a vice. Observing the order, string the petals onto the tip through the holes made and weld each subsequent layer to the previous one.

They start with a five-leaf star, then come a five-leaf star, 2 four-leaf leaves one after another, a trefoil and a propeller petal. When all the petals are collected, a rose bud is clearly visible. All that remains is to give it a more natural shape.

Starting from the center, alternately roll the petals into a tube and bend the edges. Next comes the trefoil: the petals are raised up, and their edges at the very edge are bent outward. You shouldn’t get hung up on a certain shape, no two colors are the same, it’s better to play with shape and texture.

Anti-corrosion treatment

In order to preserve the appearance of the rose for a long time, it must be treated with an anti-corrosion compound. This can be paint, special spraying or varnish. However, most often craftsmen use motor oil; this processing technique is called “bluing”.

To do this, you need to heat the rose properly, cover all its components with motor oil and reheat it so that the excess oil burns off. Since the component smokes strongly when heated, it is better to carry out the procedure outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. As a result, the rose will acquire a beautiful shade and will be protected from corrosion.

Rose made of thin tin

If you don’t have a special device, but really want to make a rose out of metal with your own hands, you can also do without welding. To do this you need to take a thin sheet of metal.

To make a rose from thin tin you will need:

  • cans;
  • pliers;
  • metal and regular scissors;
  • wire;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • nail;
  • ruler;
  • templates

Technique:

  1. Tin cans are cut, unfolded and templates are applied to them. All details of the flower and stem are outlined on the blanks, and then cut out.
  2. Using a nail and hammer, holes are made in the center of the parts.
  3. Using scissors, notches are made along the edges of the leaves, and veins are made in the center with a screwdriver.
  4. Using pliers, the stem and leaves are bent inward, forming a branch.
  5. The ends of the star are made thinner by turning them inward with pliers.
  6. I make the inner rose petals from the strips.
  7. The petals of the flower rise up, forming a basket.
  8. The wire is cut into pieces: 3 pcs. 25 cm long and 1 pc. 35 cm.
  9. The ends of three short wires are twisted into a coil, and the longer one is wrapped only on one side.
  10. All blanks are twisted to form a stem. The curls at the bottom are unrolled, thus making a stand for the flower.
  11. The stem is tightly wrapped with a thin wire along with the branch, not reaching the end 4-5 cm.
  12. Finally, the parts are strung together, starting with the star. The end of the wire is hidden inside the flower.
  13. The finished product is coated with paint from an aerosol can.

As you can see, creating a rose from metal is quite easy. Even with fragile female hands you can make a beautiful flower from a thin sheet of tin. The most important thing to pay attention to is to be careful. Working with a sharp iron is a dangerous activity.

The tools you will need are the simplest:

  • Welding machine: better semi-automatic or inverter with 2 mm electrodes at a current of no more than 70 A.
  • Grinder or, metal scissors, pliers.
  • Drill with drill bits for metal from 0.5 to 1.0 cm.
  • Unrefined or motor oil for finishing rose bluing.
  • Metal paints, if the rose needs to be painted.

Cutting without sewing, technical stages of work

The process of creating a rose:

Making a solid forged rose.

  • From sheet metal we cut out four or five, if we want a larger rose, square templates with a side length of 10 cm. In each square we draw a schematic flower with four petals, try to draw them symmetrical, but precision to the millimeter is not needed here. On the last square we draw a sepal that looks like a compass rose; exact symmetry is not necessary here either.
  • If you want to make a tea rose - wide open, with numerous petals, it is better not to be lazy and prepare the templates in the following order:
  • The sepal is a five-pointed star with a diameter of 7–8 cm.
  • The first outer blank consists of five petals with a diameter of 11 - 12 cm.
  • The second and third blanks each have four petals with a diameter of 10–11 cm.
  • The fourth blank is made of three petals with a diameter of 10 cm.
  • The fifth is made of four narrow petals with a diameter of 9 cm.
  • We cut out the blanks with metal scissors or, if available, with an angle grinder. We do not cut to the center of the figure.
  • We draw on the metal a couple or three blanks for green leaves on the stem. The size must be different. We cut out the leaves with scissors or a grinder.
  • Let's take the stem. If it is a rod, shorten it to 40 - 50 cm.
  • We drill holes in the blanks to attach them to the stem. The diameters of the holes and the stem blank must match. The rod or wire should fit tightly into the petals.
  • : We weld the blanks to the stem. The optimal thickness of the electrode is 3 mm, the current strength is from 70 to 100 A. The holes in the petals do not have to be made round, the main thing is that the stem touches them with at least half of its circumference. In this case, the seam and the structure itself will be strong. You need to melt more rods than petals - it’s easy to burn through thin metal.

You need to plant the workpiece on the stem, starting with the sepals. The petals should be placed crosswise, two centimeters below the upper tip of the stem. Each layer must be secured by welding - similar to a puff pastry.

Metal roses: finished products.

  • Now comes the most exciting and artistic part of the work: forming the rose petals! We bend the leaves of the sepals of the lower workpiece down. Turn on the gas burner and begin to gradually heat the flat petals. At this stage, moderate heating is sufficient - there is no need to heat it red-hot. We use pliers to wrap the two petals as if we were wrapping them into each other. We wrap the remaining two petals around the first two. We work like this with each layer. At the same time, bend the tips of each petal outward - in the opposite direction. At this stage, it is important to have a “free” hand: the petals should be crooked, their bends in the opposite direction should be unequal, the serifs and marks should be asymmetrical. This is the only way the flower will turn out alive and real: there are no strict geometric shapes in nature.
  • Let's start with the leaves on the stem. We make small notches on each edge of the leaves. The leaves should not be flat; it is enough to bend them with your hands. We weld it to the stem carefully at the weld points.
  • In principle, the rose is ready. But only in principle!

Artistic floriculture: design stage

The fact that it is necessary to clean up weld marks and take measures to protect against corrosion is clear - it is not subject to discussion. But further design processing raises many questions. The fact is that blacksmiths and welding masters are happy to make metal roses and post videos with master classes and their photographs on the RuNet.
