How to make a bed with your own hands with a soft headboard. An important element that sets the style and provides relaxation is a soft, DIY headboard. DIY soft headboard for a bed

Beds with a high soft headboard are cozy, luxurious and... expensive. The latter circumstance, however, should not upset those who like to decorate their home with their own hands (and we know that there are many of our readers!). A beautiful headboard is not that difficult to make yourself. Not only will you save money, but you will also be able to choose the appropriate shade of fabric and change the upholstery as you wish.

You will need:

  • Frame from an old headboard, wooden panels.
  • Profiled (cellular) foam rubber 100 x 200 cm.
  • Upholstery fabric of your choice.
  • A set of buttons for covering with fabric (37 were needed for this project).
  • Regular buttons.
  • Twine or waxed cord.
  • Universal glue.

1. Making a frame

Already have an old, ugly headboard? Great! Of course, you can buy new boards and panels, but why not use what you already have.

Now you need to find wood panels to make the headboard the right length and width. For example, the walls of an old cabinet made of MDF are suitable. We're not talking about beauty yet: just nail or screw them to the frame.

If the headboard frame is too small, extend it using bars. This is where we will staple the fabric later.

Don't strive for perfection - that's not at all necessary here. As you can see in the photo, wooden panels can be attached in any way, to any fittings you have at home - even to door hinges. Extensions can also look a little sloppy.

2. Drill holes

Now you need to drill holes in the headboard to make a diamond pattern. Many master classes advise using perforated panels, but they are expensive and not very durable. Therefore, it is better to use such a panel only for marking; a small piece of this material will suffice. Here's how to do it.

  1. Find the center of your future headboard.
  2. Align this point with the center hole in your pegboard.
  3. Count down four rows, this is where you will start marking.
  4. Mark the required points with a marker through the holes in the panel. To avoid confusion, it is good to circle the holes along which you have already made a mark.
  5. Mark and trace the first point (the fourth down from the actual center), then count 8 points horizontally and mark and trace the eighth. Continue to the end of the row, in both directions. Repeat vertically.
  6. Continue marking the headboard in a checkerboard pattern, retreating 4 points horizontally and vertically from the already marked holes.
  7. If you run out of pegboard, simply move it and line it up with a couple of points you've already marked. Continue until the entire top half of the headboard is marked. You don't need to mark the entire plane - just what will be above the level where the mattress begins.

Double-check that all holes are marked.

Advice: do not mark the headboard to the very edges, leave about 10 centimeters around the perimeter.

Time to start drilling! The holes should not be too large, just enough to allow the needle and cord to fit through them. If some of the holes are blocked at the back by the headboard frame, drill through it.

3. Add filler and fabric

Take two pieces of profiled foam rubber measuring approximately 100 by 200 cm (it is much cheaper than special upholstery foam). Place them one on top of the other on the headboard with the cells facing down. Trim off the excess. Secure it at the bottom and sides (not at the top) with a furniture stapler.

Cover the headboard with upholstery fabric: there should be a margin of 25-30 cm on each side.

Holding the fabric, lift the headboard and lean it against the wall. You'll need access to both the front and back of it, so it's a good idea to have someone help you and hold the headboard while you cover it.

4. Tighten the buttons

It's time to tighten the buttons. This can be tricky, so after you've read the instructions on the package, check out the tips below.

  1. Not all kits are created equal. I bought two of the same brand, but it turned out that the rubber matrix from one fits all the buttons better than the mold from the other. Since one set will still not be enough for you, first try all the molds you have to find the ones that suit you.
  2. Cut discs from fabric with a slightly larger diameter than the template that comes with the kit suggests. It's better to trim off the excess after you place the button cover in the die rather than trying to center a tiny piece of fabric.
  3. Insert the fabric and button cover into the mold with one edge first, and then carefully lower it all the way down.
  4. Trust me, you won't want to do all this work again, so before you insert the bottom of the button, lift the fabric and apply a little glue to it. Then press the fabric onto the button and place a drop of glue in the center. Only after this insert the bottom. Be careful not to apply too much glue so that it bleeds out of the button.
  5. Holding a plastic press in place is not easy. It slips and you have to hit it several times to securely fasten the button. And you still have to try not to hit your fingers with a hammer! Tip: glue it to a wooden stick with a glue gun so you don't have to risk your fingers and use a hammer more safely!

5. Sheathing!

Take a long needle with a wide eye, regular buttons and cord. Smooth cords are easy to untie, but easily pass through foam and fabric. Just make sure you tie a few knots at the end and secure the ponytails securely.

Take a long piece of cord, thread it through the needle and attach the button. Attach the button securely to the end of the cord by stitching it as if you were sewing it to clothing and tying a few knots.

Pass the needle through the hole in the base of the headboard and through all layers of foam and fabric, keeping it strictly perpendicular. Start with the top center hole.

When inserting the needle from the inside out, gently press the foam on the front of the headboard until the needle passes through it. Pull it out a little. Now you can go around the headboard and pull out the needle and lace completely.

Now you can fasten the covered button.

  1. Pull the lace through the eye of the button.
  2. Wrap the loose end around the button several times and thread the needle through the eye again.
  3. Slide the button down the cord and press it against the base of the headboard as firmly as you can.
  4. Cut the lace and remove the needle.
  5. Tie the ends of the cord into a knot (as if you were tying shoelaces). The knot should slide under the button.
  6. Loop the ends of the cord around the button (in opposite directions) and tie. P repeat several times, tying knots on different sides of the button.
  7. Trim the ends of the cord and hide the tails under the button.
  8. Pinch the fabric to form a fold.

Continue along the entire top row, but be careful! After you have sewn on the first button, be sure to make a small fold going up. Repeat with each button on the top row.

Once you have sewn on the first three or four buttons, stretch the fabric over them and staple them to the base of the headboard. Make sure that the vertical folds are directed in one direction! Repeat every time you sew on a few new buttons.

Continue attaching buttons to the fabric in the remaining rows, pinching the folds between them.

6. Fasten the upholstery

Once you have sewn on all the buttons, it is time to secure the fabric around the perimeter. To do this, place the headboard on the floor with the front facing down. You have already secured the upper part, but it won’t hurt to go through it with a stapler again. To make the corners neat, straighten and stretch the fabric on the sides and fold it horizontally so that a horizontal fold-seam is formed. Secure with a stapler. Continue all the way around the headboard. Don’t try too hard: everything should be neat from the front, but the back doesn’t have to be perfect.E If one of the buttons becomes loose over time (or you didn't secure it close enough to the base of the headboard in the first place), simply tighten the lace by moving a regular button to the back and nailing it with a staple or nail just below. There is no need to completely redo the work!

Done, enjoy the piece of furniture art created by your own hands!

Key points when choosing a headboard

If you decide to create a headboard for your bed yourself, consider several important conditions.

  1. Functionality. If you are going to use the headboard as a support while reading or watching movies in the evening, then it is better to choose a soft product made from a material that is easy to clean.
  2. Room size. In small bedrooms, where it is not possible to install a bedside table, it is convenient to make a wide headboard in the form of shelves. For a spacious room with high ceilings, choose a large structure.
  3. Style. If the room has a certain stylistic direction, then the headboard should emphasize and continue it. By creating a new image of the room, you can make the original headboard the central part of the composition.

You can visually lengthen the walls by making the height of the headboard greater than the width.

Interior styles that will successfully complement the headboard

There are many different interior styles where a headboard helps create a unique setting.

  1. Baroque. This style is associated with luxury, pomp, and wealth. Brocade, velvet, fringe, stucco, wood, marble, gilding are the main materials for creating interior elements.
  2. Provence. This style comes from France and combines classic elements with rustic details. Provence is characterized by delicate pastel colors, as if faded from the bright sun.
  3. Vintage. A characteristic feature is filling the interior with various antique elements.
  4. Art Deco. It combines many different styles: from the Empire style to the primitives of African tribes. The lines in the interior are straight, the materials are natural. There is a lot of abstraction, everything is simple, but very original.
  5. Loft. A combination of elements of abandonment or incompleteness and the latest technical solutions in the interior. Lots of free space, minimum partitions and decorative elements.
  6. Patchwork. This style is characterized by the use of textile fabrics created using patchwork technique.
  7. Eco-style implies as many natural elements as possible in the interior. For example, a solid wood bed, stone walls, vertical gardening.
  8. Ethnic style recreates the atmosphere of a people’s home. For example, Japanese style, oriental or tropical.
  9. Boho. A plank figured headboard is always bright, but at the same time cozy. Elements of self-expression and freedom are the basis of this style in the interior.
  10. Eclecticism. The interior combines several different styles, similar in focus and united by a common decor.

Materials from which the headboard can be made

To create soft headboards, you will need a rigid base: a sheet of plywood, elements of old furniture. Its appearance is not very important; it will still be hidden behind the upholstery. You can use natural or artificial leather as the outer layer. Textiles look very beautiful. Velvet for baroque, golden satin for rococo, floral motifs for ethno style and so on.

Options for soft headboards in the photo

A soft headboard can also be assembled from pillows using textiles and filling.

Do you have unnecessary window frames? Then you can make a soft headrest out of them by adding beautiful textile upholstery with filling.

A popular and simple technique is decoupage. With its help you can create a unique design of the bed parts.

The simplest option is a headboard made from an old mattress. You can embroider it in the desired style or upholster it with suitable material.

All that remains is to think about the fastening of such a structure, although if the mattress is large enough, you can simply nail it to the wall.

The internal soft lining between the frame and the upholstery is made of foam rubber. This is the cheapest option for manual work.

Rigid headboards are most often a decorative element, with the exception of a shelf headboard. The materials for their creation may be different.

  1. One of the simplest options is a headboard assembled from ready-made purchased boards. All that remains is to fix them on the wall and add sconces.
  2. Leftover wooden pallets can be turned into a stylish interior detail. This option is very simple and easy to use.
  3. The work of creating a product on a carved metal base to which wooden boards are attached will be a little more difficult.
  4. If you have some unwanted wooden gates, why not use them as a quirky feature for your room?
  5. Are you a professional carpenter, artist or woodcarver? Then decorating a homemade structure will not cause you much trouble.
  6. A mosaic headboard will give your bedroom a unique style or refresh an existing one.
  7. Metal forging is an excellent option for creating a bed backdrop.
  8. Is wicker weaving your favorite activity? Then perhaps you can handle this option.
  9. Do you love to knit and can you handle large-scale fabrics? Then this option is just for you.

Mirrored headboards deserve special attention. They are easy to make, look luxurious, visually expand the space and make the bedroom brighter.

In contact with

In every bedroom, the bed takes center stage. After all, this is the place where we relax after a hard day at work, watch TV, read books and sleep. Therefore, the design of this piece of furniture should be given special importance. A DIY headboard will allow you to create maximum coziness, a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom.

In this article we will talk about how you can decorate your sleeping area in an original and colorful way with an aesthetically attractive and functional headboard. The most important thing is to use a creative approach and find your own individual style using non-standard solutions.

You can make the following options for the head of your bed:

  • Metal. This is the most “ancient” type of backrest. Here you can use various forged elements of any design and shape. It is suitable for many interior design styles. For example, such as Scandinavian, classical, Romanesque and others.

  • Soft headboard. This is the simplest option for decorating a bed. Almost anyone can do it. You don't even need to have special skills here. Just listen to your imagination. Most often, such a headboard has the shape of a rectangle.

  • Wooden headboard. This is a classic option. The style of the entire bedroom directly depends on how you process the wood.

How to make a headboard with your own hands

All you need is to imagine the future design of the backrest, purchase all the necessary materials and spend a little of your time. We will tell you in more detail about what options you can build yourself later in the article.

How to make a soft headboard

Do you want to creatively decorate the interior of your bed, making it truly cozy and comfortable? You can always make a soft headboard with your own hands. The options for execution here are simply unlimited.

The headboard can be functional to lean on, as well as decorative. In any case, the bed looks much more beautiful with it than without it. You can always lean on the soft headboard and comfortably read a book before going to bed, or watch TV.

The headboard of such a bed is completely covered with fabric, under which there is soft foam rubber. Using various screeding techniques will allow you to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance. As for the fabric itself, you should choose calmer colors, because this is a bedroom in which a relaxing environment should reign. A very bright print will strain your eyes and make you even more tired.

As materials you will need:

  • fabric or leather;
  • plywood;
  • foam;
  • glue;
  • stapler

We cut out the desired shape from a plywood sheet using a jigsaw or wood saw. We lay the required amount of padding polyester or foam rubber around the entire perimeter. It must be a single piece so that pits do not form and the appearance of the finished product does not deteriorate. We fasten it with a stapler or glue. After this we cover it with fabric or leather. You can nail decorative nails around the perimeter, make a “carriage tie”, arrange everything in the form of pillows - there are a lot of options. We will talk about them below in the article.

How to make a curved headboard

It will also be soft. The only difference here is the wavy relief of the headboard. It can be absolutely anything you see it as. As a result of such a wooden headboard, your bedroom will acquire a respectable appearance, chic and wealth. The suede upholstery looks especially attractive. The perimeter of the headboard can be decorated with decorative stones, carnations or patterns.

Before you start creating a masterpiece, you need to draw a sketch of it on paper. It is better to do this in real size on whatman paper. The resulting template is easily transferred to a plywood piece.

As for the design option, there can be two of them: carriage screed or smooth. In the latter case, there is nothing complicated: attach the foam rubber to a figured sheet of plywood, trim off the excess, cover everything with fabric and fasten it on the back side along the entire perimeter, not forgetting to tighten it. The fabric will wrinkle where it bends. They should be given special attention and mounted in such a way that they are not visible on the front part.

Making a quilted headboard using the carriage screed technique

Do you want originality and sophistication? The headboard in the form of a “carriage screed” (Capitone) looks especially attractive and interesting. To do this you will need the following materials:

  • a piece of plywood of the size you need;
  • dense foam rubber with synthetic padding;
  • textile;
  • stapler, drill, crochet hook, knife, scissors;
  • buttons and a strong lace to secure them.

The manufacturing process itself is simple and consists of the following steps:

  1. The first thing to do is build a new headboard using boards and plywood. You can use the old one, but to do this, you need to clean it of all the old upholstery.
  2. Marking the holes through which the button lace will be threaded. To do this, you should use a ruler (roulette). Do everything as accurately as possible, otherwise you will not achieve a positive result.
  3. Drilling plywood in the designated places using a drill.
  4. We cut out a piece of foam rubber around the perimeter of the entire headboard blank. It is fastened with a special construction stapler.
  5. Cut a single piece of textile to the size of the headboard. Leave a margin of approximately 25 cm around the edges.
  6. The next stage is more labor-intensive - attaching the buttons. They must first be wrapped in pieces of similar fabric and glued on. It is worth using high-quality glue so that the textile does not come off over time.
  7. After the buttons have dried, take a long needle and lace (thick thread) and sew them to the headboard. We tie the button (covered with textile) well and use a needle to sew it on. The needle should be held strictly straight and move from the textile to the back wall of the headboard. We fasten everything firmly to another regular large button on the back side.
  8. When all the buttons are secured, we form a fold. It must come from above. And so on every button. After every 4th button, we stretch the material over the end of the headboard and attach the resulting folds with a stapler. As a result, you should get small diamond shapes from the folds.
  9. We fasten the fabric around the entire perimeter of the headboard, stretching it well. To make the corners as beautiful as possible, we make textile folds (the upper part is pulled over the lower part). Excess fabric near the legs must be trimmed.
    The appearance of such a bed will delight you every day and promote a relaxing mood. What else do you need in a bedroom?

How to make a headboard out of pillows

Don’t want to spend a lot on material, but at the same time transform your sleeping place? Use unnecessary pillows. It is always bright, fun, original, comfortable, unique and funny. A bed headboard with pillows is perfect for a country style interior. You won’t have any difficulties in making it here.

All you need to do is assemble a bunch of cushions and attach them with glue to the appropriate size of plywood. Also, you can make them yourself using small scraps of fabric with foam rubber. To do this, you cut the textiles into the required small sizes and form pillows from them and foam rubber. Next, they should be glued to the plywood. The result will definitely delight you with its originality, beauty and creativity.

How to make a leather headboard

Do you like everything stylish, modern and luxurious? Then a leather headboard for a bed is the best option. With it, your sleeping place will certainly become the main decoration in the bedroom. This will also save money, since a leather bed in a store will cost you a lot.

Leather as a material has the following undeniable advantages:

  • solidity;
  • long service life;
  • excellent dirt-repellent properties;
  • easy care;
  • aesthetic appeal of the interior.

But it is important to choose the right material for upholstery. The skin should not be very thick (up to 3 mm), elastic and without defects. In this case, it will be very easy for you to work with it. When covering, do not allow moisture to enter.

How to sew a cover for the headboard

This work can be done from any material: fabric, leather, leatherette, suede, etc. During the sewing process, you should make an allowance of a couple of centimeters on all sides (based on the thickness of the filler). Thanks to this, you can easily put the cover on a pre-designed or existing headboard. It is necessary to sew from the wrong side.

As for the filler (sintepon or foam rubber), it can be added after putting on the cover. A case decorated with decorative stitches, buttons, buttons and other decors looks very nice. But for this you must have the appropriate sewing technique in order to make a beautiful and original cover for the head of the bed. In any case, there are no restrictions here, except for the flight of your design thoughts.

How to design a bed headboard

If you want to plunge into the life of the French province, you can choose the Provence style. This is a stylization of the life of an old village. A lot of textiles are used here, with flowers depicted on them. Light colors predominate, such as blue, light green, lavender, white and others.

A bed with lighting at the top of the headboard will look original. This light can be used as a night light. Also, it will create a romantic and relaxing atmosphere.

A fabric headboard in the same color as the curtains in the bedroom will look very nice.

If your bedroom does not have large spaces, then every square meter is golden. A wonderful find in this option can be shelves located above the head of the bed. Most often there are several of them. These shelves will very conveniently accommodate your favorite books that you like to read before bed, family photos, as well as many different decors.

Do you want to make your bedroom as spacious as possible and, at the same time, beautiful? Then it’s worth rationally using all the available space. To save space, an excellent option could be a bed with a wardrobe at the head. It is located around the perimeter of the bed. You can make it yourself, to order, or purchase ready-made headsets.
